The Aran Jumper takes its name from the Aran Islands, the set of islands (Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr) where it originated many generations ago, off the West coast of Ireland at the mouth of Galway Bay.
The Islanders were made up of fishing and farming communities whose lives and livelihoods were deeply intertwined. The Aran Jumper was born of this environment.
Aran Jumpers Ireland garments are ethically made from sustainable materials and hand finished by a team of skilled craftspeople in the west of Ireland. Our knitwear is crafted using 100% Merino Wool.
Our traditional Aran Jumpers feature some of the most ornate stitches in Aran Knitting. The traditional Cable stitch comes in many cable variations and is said to symbolise fisherman’s ropes. This stitch is seen as a symbol of safety and good luck for the fishermen while at sea. The intricate Honeycomb stich is said to be a lucky stitch. Signifying abundance and in the case of fishermen a good catch. The Basket Stitch represents the fisherman’s basket. It is an omen of a good and plentiful catch. The Moss stitch is said to symbolise abundance and growth.
